What Breast Implants Can Do For You

Breast augmentation can be performed as a cosmetic or reconstructive surgery. While some patients simply want cosmetic enhancement, others want to restore lost breast tissue after a mastectomy or chest trauma.

However, breast augmentation is not designed to address sagging breast tissue. If you are unhappy with the projection of your bust line because of weight loss, pregnancy, or aging, you may be a better candidate for a breast lift. Dr. Berbari can combine breast augmentation with a breast lift to give you the shape, size, and lift you desire.

Breast Augmentation Candidates

In this video, Dr. Berbari discusses who is a suitable breast lift or breast augmentation candidate. You may want a breast augmentation if you are dissatisfied with the size of your breasts. It can also benefit women who have had children and want to restore lost breast volume.

Is Breast Augmentation Safe?

All surgical procedures carry a degree of risk. Choosing a board-certified surgeon is one of the most important things a patient can do to maximize their safety.

Dr. Berbari is always careful to strike a balance between what the patient wants and what is safe for their body. At Centre Chirurgical De La Capitale in Gatineau, Quebec, we dedicate a generous amount of time to our initial consultations so that we can build strong patient-surgeon relationships, consistently exceed patient expectations, and ensure successful breast augmentations.

To further promote your safety, we only use breast implants that have been approved by Health Canada.

What to Expect During Breast Augmentation Surgery

Plastic Surgery Consultation

Each patient has a different personal motivation for their breast augmentation. During your in-office consultation, Dr. Berbari and her staff listen carefully, noting your objectives, discussing the risks associated with breast implants, and letting you know what to expect during the procedure. Throughout your journey, it is important to maintain realistic expectations and to be mindful that breast augmentation achieves enhancement, not perfection.

Anesthesia

On the day of surgery, our plastic surgeon will welcome you to her in-office surgical suite. For your comfort, breast augmentation surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia. During surgery, you will remain in a sleep-like state and wake up gently when the surgery is over.

Incisions

Dr. Berbari understands that most patients want to conceal their scars, so she uses a conservative approach when performing the surgery. By making the small surgical incision in the natural fold of your skin and crease of your breast, most post-surgery scars remain hidden. In some cases, patients' needs are best met by placing a circular incision around the areola. With proper care, your incisions will heal relatively quickly and the scars will become less visible over time, resulting in a discreet, natural-looking enhancement.

Breast Implant Placement

Dr. Berbari provides patients with two options for implant placement. The first is subglandular placement, during which Dr. Berbari creates a pocket between the breast tissue and the pectoral muscle. She then places the implant under a smooth and protective layer of tissue. The second method is submuscular, during which Dr. Berbari creates a pocket underneath the pectoral muscle to camouflage the implant. Depending on your personal wishes and the properties of your chest, she will help you choose the best option.

Recovering From Breast Augmentation

Recovery from breast augmentation surgery varies for each patient, but all patients can generally expect soreness during the first two days of recovery. Because Dr. Berbari wants to make your experience as comfortable as possible, she prescribes pain medication to counteract negative side effects.

You will also receive a compression garment to wear for approximately six weeks after your surgery. For your convenience, these are available at our surgery center.

To reduce the risk of capsular contracture, you will be instructed to massage your breasts gently during your recovery.

Risks & Complications

Like any surgery, breast augmentation carries some degree of risk. Dr. Berbari dedicates extensive consultation time to ensure patients are aware of potential complications, which could include:

  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Pain
  • Problems with scarring
  • Re-opening of incision
  • Capsular contracture (hardening of the breast)

However, while certain factors like medications, smoking, sun exposure, the type of breast implant, and the placement of the breast implant can increase your risk of complications, certain issues are completely unpredictable. It is important to be aware of and prepared for unforeseen side effects.
